🌋 Earthquake & Tsunami Preparedness Across ASEAN's Ring of Fire
Your contribution helps communities across Southeast Asia's earthquake and tsunami zones prepare for, survive, and recover from seismic disasters. Support early warning systems, evacuation infrastructure, disaster-resistant construction, emergency preparedness, and rapid response capacity in the world's most seismically active region.
🌏 ASEAN Earthquake & Tsunami Risk
The Challenge: Southeast Asia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire—the world's most seismically active zone. Indonesia, Philippines, Myanmar, and other ASEAN nations face constant threats from earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions. The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami killed 230,000 people across ASEAN. Recent earthquakes in Indonesia, Philippines, and Myanmar kill thousands and destroy infrastructure. 200 million people live in high-risk seismic zones.
Indonesia's Seismic Threat: Indonesia experiences 5,000+ earthquakes annually. Sitting on the convergence of three tectonic plates, Indonesia faces megathrust earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions. The 2004 Aceh tsunami killed 170,000 Indonesians. The 2018 Palu earthquake and tsunami killed 4,300. The 2006 Yogyakarta earthquake killed 5,700. Millions live in tsunami-prone coastal areas.
Philippines Earthquake Risk: Philippines sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire with multiple active fault lines. The 1990 Luzon earthquake killed 1,600. The 2013 Bohol earthquake killed 220. Metro Manila faces catastrophic risk from the West Valley Fault—a magnitude 7+ earthquake could kill 35,000 and displace millions.
Myanmar Seismic Zones: Myanmar's Sagaing Fault runs through the country's center. Recent earthquakes have killed hundreds and destroyed thousands of buildings. Yangon and Mandalay face significant earthquake risk.
Tsunami Vulnerability: Coastal communities across Indonesia, Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia, and Philippines face tsunami threats. The 2004 tsunami devastated Thailand's Andaman coast, killing 5,400. Without early warning and evacuation infrastructure, future tsunamis will kill thousands.
Volcanic Eruptions: Indonesia has 130 active volcanoes—more than any country. Eruptions displace millions, destroy farmland, cause respiratory illnesses, and trigger lahars (volcanic mudflows) that bury communities.
Infrastructure Vulnerability: Most buildings in ASEAN are not earthquake-resistant. Schools, hospitals, homes, and infrastructure collapse during earthquakes, killing occupants and preventing emergency response.
