The Challenge: 10 million migrant workers move within ASEAN annually seeking better livelihoods. From Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, Philippines, Indonesia, and Vietnam—they work in Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and other destination countries. They build cities, care for children and elderly, work in factories and farms. Yet they face exploitation, abuse, unpaid wages, dangerous conditions, and rights violations. Without legal protection, they suffer in silence.
Domestic Workers: 2 million domestic workers—mostly women from Philippines, Indonesia, Myanmar, Cambodia—work in homes across ASEAN. Caring for children, elderly, cooking, cleaning. Many face abuse, unpaid wages, excessive work hours, confinement, and violence. Without labor law protection, they have no recourse.
Construction Workers: Millions of men from Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos work on construction sites in Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore. Dangerous conditions, no safety equipment, wage theft, debt bondage. Injuries and deaths are common. Families receive no compensation.
Factory Workers: Garment factories, electronics assembly, food processing—migrant workers face exploitation, low wages, forced overtime, unsafe conditions. Unable to organize or demand rights.
Trafficking & Forced Labor: Recruitment agencies trap workers in debt bondage. Passports confiscated. Forced to work without pay. Physical and sexual abuse. Unable to escape. Trafficking networks operate across ASEAN with impunity.
Legal Vulnerability: Undocumented migrants face arrest, detention, deportation. Even documented workers have limited rights. Cannot change employers. Cannot organize unions. Deportation threats silence complaints.
This contribution campaign may support large-scale migrant worker rights and welfare initiatives across ASEAN through GivingDonate's discretionary support model. Upon receiving contributions, we will strategically select countries and programs based on migrant worker populations, exploitation severity, and implementation capacity.
